Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration after 20-Year Afforestation of Mangrove Plantations on Qi’ao Island, Southern China

چکیده

Mangrove afforestation is considered an important measure in the “natural-based solution” for mitigating climate warming through sequestering massive carbon (C) into vegetation biomass, yet how planted mangrove species facilitate soil C sequestration remains unclear. Here, we investigated stock, source, and fraction of organic (SOC) over 1 m depth after 20-year five pure plantations (Acrostichum aureum, Acanthus ilicifolius, Aegiceras corniculatum, Kandelia obovate, Excoecaria agallocha) on Qi’ao Island, South China. The results showed that SOC stocks did not significantly differ among plantations, with average value 16.7 kg m−2. Based two-end-member mixing model plant–soil stable isotope signatures, autochthonous (mangrove-derived) source accounted 20.2–34.1% but varied plantations. stock particulate (1.2–2.0 g kg−1) mineral-associated (14.3–16.0 also differed similar different contributions fractions observed here may have implications to optimize stand structure maximize sequestration.

The Impact of Afforestation on Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration on the Qinghai Plateau, China

Afforestation, the conversion of non-forested land into forest, is widespread in China. However, the dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) after afforestation are not well understood, especially in plateau climate zones. For a total of 48 shrub- and/or tree-dominated afforestation sites on the Qinghai Plateau, Northwestern China, post-afforestation changes in SOC, total nitrogen (TN), the carbo...

Soil organic carbon sequestration potential of cropland in China

[1] Soil organic carbon (SOC) in cropland is of great importance to the global carbon (C) balance and to agricultural productivity, but it is highly sensitive to human activities such as irrigation and crop rotation. It has been observed that under certain improved management practices, cropland soils can sequestrate additional C beyond their existing SOC level before reaching the C saturation ...

Soil Inorganic Carbon Sequestration Following Afforestation Is Probably Induced by Pedogenic Carbonate Formation in Northwest China

In arid and semiarid areas, the effects of afforestation on soil organic carbon (SOC) have received considerable attention. In these areas, in fact, soil inorganic carbon (SIC), rather than SOC, is the dominant form of carbon, with a reservoir approximately 2-10 times larger than that of SOC. A subtle fluctuation of SIC pool can strongly alter the regional carbon budget. However, few studies ha...

Changes in Soil Microbial Community and Its Effect on Carbon Sequestration Following Afforestation on the Loess Plateau, China

Afforestation plays an important role in soil protection and ecological restoration. The objective of this study is to understand the effect of afforestation on soil carbon and soil microbial communities in the Loess Plateau of China. We measured two chemically-separated carbon fractions (i.e., humic acid, HA, and fulvic acid, FA) and soil microbial communities within shrublands (18-year-old Ca...

Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration in Reclaimed Minesoils

Land disturbance during mining results in loss of soil organic carbon (SOC). Reclamation of minelands can lead to recuperation and sequestration of SOC. The SOC thus accumulated, not only replenishes SOC losses but may also offset additional carbon di-oxide (CO2) emission. The assessment of the above was done on a chronosequence of reclaimed minesoils comprising pasture with topsoil application...
